EARTHKEEPING
NEWS A NEWSLETTER
OF THE NORTH AMERICAN COALITION FOR CHRISTIANITY AND ECOLOGY
THE CONTEXT OF NACCE'S MISSION
Creation's Wholeness
Creation reflects the integrity, grace and beneficence of its Creator. All things
pour out praise to their Creator. The integrity of creation and creation's voice
leave all people without excuse but to know God's divinity and power. God loves the
whole creation, the cosmos, and provides for all its creatures.
Creation's Impoverishment
But humankind, in its arrogance and greed, relentlessly oppresses the Earth, denying
it its Sabbath rest. This we do, not only as individuals, but as people embodied
as corporations for the purpose of powerful, more efficient exploitation of earth.
The integrity of creation is violated through:
- The degradation of earth's energy exchange with the sun;
- Loss of land to urbanization;
- Erosion, salinization, and desertification of soil;
- Deforestation;
- Species extinction;
- Degradation of surface water and ground water;
- Global toxification of atmosphere and oceans;
- Degradation of indigenous human cultures together with their longstanding knowledge
of living sustainably on earth.
Not only is creation's fruit
taken, but creation's very
fruitfulness is destroyed.
We are impoverishing creation's
ability to bring God praise we are
diminishing creation's witness.
The Response
Because we have seen the degradation and the need for Christians to take up revolutionary
creativity, society transforming repentance, it is our purpose through NACCE to:
- Articulate the ecological dimension present in Christianity;
- Assist every church to become a witness to Christian ecological understanding
and action;
- Help every Christian to become an ecologist;
- Work with people of all faith traditions to develop a global ethic as a basis
for a just and sustainable society on earth.
We are drawn to appropriate action by our love of God and God's creation, Christ's
love for the world, and the Holy Spirit working in our hearts.
