Climate Chaos Brings Churched and Un-churched Together In London Rally

On November 4th, the I Count rally in Trafalgar Square, a diverse gathering including comedians, rock and pop stars, bishops, aid agency executives, and ordinary citizens, sent a clear message to Government to negotiate an international deal to keep global warming to less than 2 degrees centigrade, and introduce into the Queen’s speech in Parliament a climate change bill that delivers annual cuts in UK carbon dioxide emissions

The rally was organized by the Stop Climate Chaos coalition, a network of activist groups including Operation Noah -- an ecumenical Christian movement. For Christians joining the protest the day began with a worship service of “challenge, commitment and blessing” in Grosvenor Chapel. The Bishop of London, Richard Chartres, gave the sermon and other leaders spoke on the issues from a Christian perspective.

In the main event the Bishop reiterated his theological imperative to act on climate change: “We are not masters and possessors of the earth, but tenants and stewards. Together we have a responsibility to God, to future generations and our own well being on this earth, to take action.”

The rally was timed to coincide with key climate change talks taking place in Nairobi, Kenya, before they gathered for the United Nations’ Climate Change Conference on 6 November.
