Volume Fifteen, Number One January / February 2006 CALL TO ACTIONIn his State of the Union address on January 31 Mr. Bush said that “America is addicted to oil” and set a goal of replacing 75 percent of the nation’s Mideast oil imports by 2025 with ethanol and other energy sources. On the same day as his address, Exxon Mobil, the United State's largest oil company, announced an annual profit that set a new record, not only for the oil industry but for all American corporations. EM's annual profit of $36 billion easily exceeded that of Wal-Mart for the year. Mobil said its overall profit climbed more than 40 percent last year, while its tax bill rose only 14 percent. Its total revenue of $371 billion surpassed the gross domestic product of Indonesia, the world's fourth largest nation with 244 million people. Write your senator and congressman and tell them to support the Vehicle and Fuel Choices for American Security Act. This draft bill aims to reduce oil consumption by 2.5 million barrels a day by 2015 and 7 m.b.d. by 2025 — much more than the president’s proposal.
