Volume Fourteen, Number Two March/April 2005 For a Spring Church ServiceThe sun crossed the celestial equator Sunday, March 20 at 12:33 p.m. That was sunrise in the heartland U.S., high noon in Spain and western Africa, sunset in India, and midnight in New Zealand. The vernal equinox signals beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere and beginning of autumn in the southern hemisphere. Joel Block refers to this "as a great equalizer worldwide: at every equinox, the sun rises due east and sets due west all around the world, [because] everyone on Earth receives about 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night." ("Equinox" means "equal night.") Suppose God sends us the equinox to remind us that we all must share this world equally together? At this season of new beginnings, I hope we can all pause for a moment to appreciate the balancing power of God's grace, to respect the wondrous system he has created for us, and to pray for a true equality between nations, faiths and cultures; "For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends the rain on the just and on the unjust." Praise be to the Lord for the gift of Balance. Shannon may be reached at eizya@redjellyfish.net.
