Volume Fourteen, Number Six November / December 2005 ResourcesDemocracy’s Edge: Choosing to Save Our Country by Bringing Democracy to Life by Frances Moore Lappe ($25), John Wiley and Son, 2006. The book discusses patterns of causation in the decline of democracy and stories of local people fighting to strengthen it. The dominant “mental map” in our society is to give ourselves over to the “magic of the market,” which we now export throughout the world as ‘free market” and “thin democracy”. We are at the edge, as the power of privatization corrupts democracy. Stories of awakening consciousness, new possibilities and local successes make this a hope-filled book.
