Conference Launches Action Against Mountaintop Coal Mining

“The Earth is the Lord’s” was the theme of the inaugural conference of Christians For The Mountains. Forty people gathered in Charleston, West Virginia, November 11-12 to develop a strategy that will engage churches in ending the devastating mountaintop removal (MTR) mining method.

Keynote addresses were given by noted native-born author Denise Giardina and federal whistleblower Jack Spadaro. Asbury Seminary professor Howard Snyder delivered a biblical basis for responsible earthkeeping. The group worked on organizational goals to equip members with tools for engaging churches on mountaintop removal mining. Twelve conference goers went on air flights over the southern coalfields for aerial views of the vast destruction of mountaintop removal with Southwings, a non-profit organization of pilots dedicated to exposing environmental destruction. Others visited Kayford Mountain, a privately-owned oasis in the midst of 5,000 acres of mountaintop removal.

Christians For The Mountains encourages people of faith across North America to join with us in our struggle. The most botanically diverse temperate region in the world, the mixed mesophytic forest of the southern Appalachians, along with the communities of people that inhabit this area, are being permanently sacrificed to provide energy for the nation.
