ACTION ALERT

Support Safe Water for Peace Act

Each day 1.1 billion of the world's citizens live without access to clean drinking water, while 2.6 billion lack access to basic sanitation services. A bipartisan group of Senators, led by Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) and Minority leader Harry Reid (D-NV), have introduced legislation to initiate US leadership in response to the world's water crisis.

The bill called The Safe Water: Currency for Peace Act of 2005 (S.492), sets up a five-year program to provide loan-guarantee assistance for the creation of water and sanitation projects in the developing world. It also endorses the use of US funds for education programs to advance good health and economic development by improving the safety of water supplies, expanding access to safe water and sanitation, and promoting sound water management.

In addition to writing your Senators asking them to support the Frist-Reid bill, send your House member a message drawing attention to the world's water crisis. US lawmakers rarely hear from constituents on worldwide water and sanitation issues, despite the pivotal role these issues play in global health and stability. Contact your Senators at www.senate.gov and your Representatives at www.congress.gov.
