REMINDERS ON BUSY DAYS

The United Methodist Review reminds us, for the Energy Task Force of NCCC in the USA, to:

  1. Appoint a team of three to seven people to lead your church in good energy stewardship. Include the custodian and pastor as well as building, finance, social ministry and religious education representatives.
  2. Have a professional energy audit taken to assess the building's heating, cooling, and electrical systems and major equipment.
  3. Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. Put light-emitting diodes in exit signs which run continuously.
  4. Set back heat and turn off air conditioning when the space is empty. Programmable thermostats work well and are simple to use.
  5. Wrap your water heater with a three-inch insulation blanket if it is more than five years old. Talk with a plumber about replacing standard toilets with low-flush toilets.
  6. Refrigerators are one of the most costly energy users. They are more energy-efficient if they are full than empty. Make sure there is adequate clearance (three inches in the back, one on each side).
  7. When replacing appliances, look for an energy-efficient model and recycle the old.
