Quakers Resist War on Environment

The Chestnut Hill Monthly Meeting launched its "CFLs for Peace" campaign on March 2, selling compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) to raise consciousness about energy-efficiency issues and the connection between energy policy and war. Since CFLs use one fourth the electricity and last up to nine times as long as incandescent bulbs, one 26 watt cfl, in its lifetime, will save almost $100 in electricity and prevent 65 pounds of CO2 from being emitted into the environment.

Bellingham Friends in Unity with Nature have been encouraged to make the connection between our use of oil and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. One member, not young, has sold her car and travels by foot or public transportation. They have urged the lowering of car speeds in order to use less oil and decrease pollution.

In the midst of the anti-war activities, Atlanta Green Friends are sponsoring an eight-week study group inspired by Quaker Eco-Bulletin articles and Keith Helmuth's Friends Journal article, "Why Simple Living Is Not Enough". They had sessions on "Incorporation of Environmental Costs into Economic Systems." Their next session is on the Global Rule of Law.
