Walking With The Moon

by Guy D'Angelo, Center Moriches NY, a Board member of NACCE (dnkdan@faol.net)

For the past year, I have been going to the monthly full-moon labyrinth walks at the Siena Retreat Center, run by the Dominican Sisters in Water Mill, NY, on the south shore of Long Island.

Sister Nancy Erts, a Dominican Sister of Hope, leads the programs. Before we walk, she usually gives a brief talk on the history and meaning of the labyrinth and the walk. Walkers are given a program of readings, poems, prayers, songs and dances that will be used before, in the middle of, and after the walk, most of which is done in silence. Walkers are urged to free themselves of their current concerns and let the spirit of the natural surroundings enter their thoughts.

After the labyrinth walk, participants gather for refreshments and discussion. Last May, when there were about 20 participants, what most impressed me was the level of concern expressed at what we humans are doing to our planet. The discussion echoed NACCE's mission statement.

Although these walks don't exactly fit NACCE's vision of an earthkeeping circle, the same message is being heard and acted on. So I tell Sr. Nancy, "This is my Earthkeeping circle."
