UCC CONGREGATIONS ENCOURAGED TO
EXERCISE CITIZENSHIP
United Church of Christ (www.ucc.org) congregations are
involved in a campaign to educate people on the issues, "get out
the vote" activities, and voter registration.
In an election year, it is important to note that churches can
register voters, engage in issue forums with candidates, and
encourage voters to go to the polls on election day.
What churches cannot do is endorse candidates or make
contributions to candidates for public office. The Jones bill
(H.R.235), also called the "Houses of Worship Free Speech
Restoration" Act, seeks to change this. The Jones bill, which
last year had over 130 cosponsors in the House, will once again
be before Congress in 2004.
