The declaration read in part: "Christians and all other believers have a specific role to play in proclaiming moral values and in educating people in ecologic awareness, which is none other than responsibility toward self, toward others, and toward creation." Patriarch Bartholomew I, often known as the "Green Pope" for his constant environmental advocacy, had just completed a five-day tour of the Adriatic Sea with 250 scientists, politicians, and religious leaders.
