Volume Eleven, Number Five July/August 2002 POPE AND PATRIARCH SIGN GREEN DECLARATIONJoined by video link, Pope John Paul II and Patriarch Bartholomew I in June signed a declaration stating that protecting the environment is a moral and spiritual duty. The declaration read in part: "Christians and all other believers have a specific role to play in proclaiming moral values and in educating people in ecologic awareness, which is none other than responsibility toward self, toward others, and toward creation." Patriarch Bartholomew I, often known as the "Green Pope" for his constant environmental advocacy, had just completed a five-day tour of the Adriatic Sea with 250 scientists, politicians, and religious leaders. A large petroleum chemical facility near Venice, Italy, has been especially damaging to local waters. From Frank Morris
