PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH VOTES FOR CLEAN AIR

In June, the Presbyterian Church USA endorsed a call to clean up "grandfathered" coal-burning power plants and protect the Clean Air Act. In its annual General Assembly in Columbus, Ohio, the Church passed a resolution that recognizes the role these old plants play in numerous health and environmental problems.

"The Presbyterian Church USA has issued a clear appeal on behalf of the millions of Americans who battle dirty air nationwide," said Monica Gibson, Associate Attorney with the Southern Environmental Law Center. "With this resolution, they join a wide range of groups who are asking utility companies and government officials to take action."

When Congress passed the Clean Air Act, it did not require coal powered plants to install pollution controls unless they were being modernized. Today, these old plants pollute our air up to 10 times as much as newer coal-fired power plants. This pollution is also a leading contributor to acid rain, ozone damage to crops, and global warming.

"We strive for the restoration of the earth and the protection of human life. Pollution from these power plants harms both." said Lynn Cameron, Mission Leader for the Trinity Restoring Creation House Church, who co-authored the resolution.
