Volume Ten, Number Three March/April 2001 PLAN AN EARTH DAY ENERGY FAST!PULL THE PLUG AND CHANGE POLICY!The Earth Day Energy Fast seeks to transform the entertainment approach to Earth Day, April 22, into a hands-on day of action, asking people all over the world to cut back, or go completely without, manmade energy on every Earth Day; and to apply the energy saving techniques throughout the rest of the year. Turn down thermostat settings, close unused vents, use curtains/shades and passive solar techniques for warmth; carpool, take mass-transit, ride a bike, scooter or walk for transportation; turn out unneeded lights and use natural light. If you're willing to spend money: buy and install compact fluorescent bulbs; Turn down water-heater setting at least one mark, turn off water while brushing teeth, install displacement bag in toilet-tank; prepare non-cooked meals such as fruit, salads, and cold sandwiches; enjoy nature and the outdoors and turn off the TV, VCR, DVD, video and computer games. If you Pull the Plug this Earth Day and every Earth Day, you are sending a message to the policy-makers that you want Renewable Energy and Efficiency and common sense conservation programs as the focus of national energy policy in the US, not more coal and nuclear plants.
