Dec. 8-10
Hendersonville, NC |
The CONFERENCE ON RELIGION AND FOREST CONSERVATION, organized by the Religious
Campaign for Forest Conservation, will address the fast-growing problem of chip mills
in the Southeast, push an expanded campaign to end logging on national forests, and
articulate a new vision of forests for the 21st century, (with continuing cooperation
between religious and forest conservation groups).
Initial co-sponsors are the Coalition on Religion in Appalachia (CORA), The Dogwood
Alliance, Episcopal Appalachia Ministries, the Roman Catholic Franciscan JPIC Committee
in the Southeast, American Lands, and the Southern Biodiversity Project.
A groundswell of support for the preservation of forests is evidenced by the additional
organizations that have responded to the invitiation to co-sponsor, including: Sierra
Club; Au Sable Institute; Kids Against Pollution; Student Environmental Coalition;
Christians Caring for Creation; American Lands Association; Immaculate Conception
Church, Durham, NC; Virginia Forest Watch; Restore the North Woods; The John Muir
Project; the National Forest Protection Association; Active Students for a Healthy
Environment (ASHE); Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (Dept. of Envir. Stewardship);
and World Stewardship Institute.
This will be the first time religious groups have joined with forest conservation
groups to discuss policy and plan joint ventures.
