Volume Nine, Number Two January/February 2000 ELECTION YEAR CAMPAIGN — END LOGGING ON PUBLIC LANDSThe Religious Campaign for Forest Conservation, the National Forest Protection Alliance, the National Catholic Rural Life Conference, and the Alliance for Sustainable Jobs and the Environment are mobilizing thousands of concerned citizens in this election year to deliver a message to national legislators and to candidates — End Logging on Public Lands! The Religious Campaign for Forest Conservation is inviting representatives from Christian churches, Jewish synagogues and dozens of para-religious organizations to speak out for Forests and Creation Care in Washington DC, February 27 - March 1. The group is organizing meetings with elected representatives, congressional staff briefings, and visits with administration officials. The National Forest Protection Campaign, with close to 200 participating organizations across the country, is utilizing party caucuses, state primaries, candidate debates and other media events to call for an end to the federal subsidy to logging corporations for clear-cutting national forests, at a net loss to tax-payers of roughly $1 billion a year. Candidates are urged to support the National Forest Protection and Restoration Act (NFPRA), introduced in 1997 by Representative Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) and Representative Jim Leach (R-IA) as H.R. 1396. This bill would end the commercial logging program, though it does not affect other subsidies for grazing, mining and oil and gas development.
