Call to Action:

Join the Global Warming Campaign

Global warming is an inescapable religious challenge, an ethical responsibility. There is a growing scientific consensus that global warming is accelerating because of human activity. Industrialized society's pollution of the atmosphere is a threat to the quality of life now, and for all our descendants (human and non-human).

The Earth Day Network has launched the Clean Energy Campaign as a focus for Earth Day 2000. Local and state groups are planning a wide range of strategies, using public celebrations, rallies and other advocacy events to motivate the public toward a renewable energy future.

Earth Day 2000 falls on the Holy Saturday between Good Friday and Easter Sunday — a unique opportunity to link the healing of creation with new life in Christ. The National Council of Churches (NCC) Eco-Justice Working Group has published a packet of information, resources and strategies for individuals and congregations.

Beginning where we are, we can use less fossil-fuel energy. We can ask our congregations to make a commitment to care for all God's creation through worship, teaching, congregational lifestyle, and national and global involvement. We can promote the EPA Energy Star Congregation program.

Information available from NCC Environmental Justice Resources, PO Box 968, Elkhart IN 46515; 800/762-0968 includes: NCC Global Warming Information and Strategy Packets ($3, EJ-9900); It's God's World: Christians, Care of Creation and Global Warming ($2, EJ-9701); and Global Warming: A Religious Issue, a briefing paper on science, public policy and faith (4 for $1, EJ-9955).
