Volume Eight, Number Six September/October 1999 SISTERS OF EARTHIn 1993 three Sisters of St. Joseph, Mary Southard, CSJ, Evelyn Sommers, CSJ, and Mary Dolan, CSJ, decided to find out how many religious women were involved in earth spirituality. They made up a flyer announcing a meeting of the Sisters of Earth to be held at St Gabriel's Monastery in Clarks Summit PA in July 1994. Fifty people came to St Gabriel's, and Sisters of Earth was launched. It is primarily a networking organization, with a yearly newsletter, and a meeting every 2 years. The second meeting was in July 1996 at Grailville OH, attended by about 100 persons, mainly religious women. Other women began joining as well, Catholic and non-Catholic. The 1998 gathering was at Sinsinawa Mound Center, Wisconsin. There are now over 200 members. The next meeting will be Aug. 17-20, 2000, at Casa De Maria in Santa Barbara. They spent three days sharing their hopes and fears, successes and failures, concerning the integration of a truly cosmological dimension into spirituality. The coordinators of the Gathering are James Conlon, of Sophia Center of Holy Names College, Oakland; Dennis O'Hara of Elliott Allen Institute in Toronto; and John Surette, SJ, of Spiritearth, Jamaica.
