EVANGELICAL CHRISTIAN COLLEGES EXPAND GLOBAL STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM INITIATIVE

Under a $200,000 grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts in 1994, the 93- member Coalition for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) began a Global Stewardship initiative with two goals:

  1. To develop new, or expanded, multi-disciplinary programs at CCCU institutions in the interrelated areas of environmental degradation, resource consumption and population growth.
  2. To produce high quality scholarship informed by a Christian faith perspective in these interrelated areas of global stewardship.

Initially, 17 CCCU institutions participated in this program. The curriculum development and faculty research resulting from this initiative are highlighted on a Web page (http://cesc.montreat.edu) developed by Dr. Mark Lassiter of Montreat College, NC.

With grants from the Evangelical Environmental Network (EEN), 16 additional CCCU institutions, having little or no previous global stewardship activity, were added to the original network of 17 institutions, to begin global stewardship projects on their respective campuses.

Whereas these first programs have focused primarily, but not exclusively, on faculty and program development, a one-year collaboration initiated in 1998 between the CCCU and the Campus Program of Target Earth (formerly the Christian Environmental Association) will focus primarily on student development through student leadership training, campus Creation Care workshops, and regional Creation Care clinics. The goals of this program are to train 300 students in creation care, and to initiate 20 student creation care groups at CCCU institutions.
