Saint Francis spoke
to the swallows
settled on the spires and
rooftops of Alverno,
to the small fishes in the pool by the roadside,
to the wolf who had been
eating the children
of Gubbio.
He bade them to praise God, and be at peace.
St. Francis spoke to the
lords of the land,
to the pope and
princes of the church,
and to the poor and
the sick and the outcast.
St. Francis bade them
to hear again what Christ
had plainly said,
and then, simply, to do it.
St. Francis spoke to God,
but in those conversations,
mostly he listened.
