CONGREGATION USES INVESTMENT SCREENS

St. Paul's-on-the-Hill, a small Episcopal church in St. Paul, Minnesota, is investing a substantial portion of a recent gift in a socially responsible fund. The income is to be used only for the outreach mission of the church.

A congregational survey, asking what positive and negative screens should guide the church's investment policy, revealed strong support for companies that support human rights, avoid worker exploitation, and use "sustainable resources." A small fraction thought the church should avoid investment in nuclear power, coal production and petro-chemicals.

There are over 100 socially responsible investment funds (SRIs). In addition to the return on investment, most funds evaluate a company's performance in the areas of community, environment, employee relations and diversity.
