CONGREGATIONS JOIN FOR HABITAT RESTORATION

The Interreligious Sustainability Project of Chicago, organized by the Center for Neighborhood Technology, in October sponsored a Seed Gathering Weekend, an opportunity for religious congregations to do hands-on habitat restoration work. The event was held in cooperation with Chicago Wilderness, a coalition of more than sixty public and private organizations working together to restore, protect, and manage the natural resources of the region.

Nearly 40 people came from different traditions and congregations, including Beth Emet Synagogue of Evanston, Evanston Friends Meeting, Wheadon United Methodist Church of Evanston, First Congregational Church of LaGrange, and St. Thomas Lutheran Church of LaGrange. At three Cook County Forest Preserves, they gathered seeds of native plants. At each site, the event included a brief religious reflection on the spiritual meaning of habitat restoration.

A Seed Sowing and Habitat Restoration Weekend will be held in April 1999, at which time the seeds gathered this Fall will be sown. Other events for religious congregations scheduled for next Spring include a practical workshop on making your congregation a Green Zone and a dialogue on sustainability with John Cobb, Jr., both at Lutheran School of Theology.
