CONGREGATION LAUNCHES ENVIRONMENTALLY GROUNDED BUSINESS

Founded in June 1992 by eight unemployed residents meeting for Bible study in MacArthur Park, Los Angeles, Mission de Pueblo Nuevo, designated an Episcopal Jubilee Ministry for Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation, has grown into a 200 member congregation, a community development corporation and several businesses. It was honored as a community hero in 1997.

An initial congregtional thrift shop generated seed money to start a janitorial company, Pueblo Nuevo Enterprises, which employs 22 workers. Their janitorial service also offers help in establishing workable recycling programs; identification and elimination of primary sources of indoor pollution; day porter service; and housekeeping for health care institutions.

Pueblo Nuevo Workshop, opened in 1996, provides local artists, carpenters, and other craft-people employment and an outlet for their work.
