Landmark Conference Accelerates Dialogue Between Science and Religion

Perhaps no other subject has fostered the public image of science at war with religion more than Evolution. To illustrate the possibilities of meaningful dialogue between science and religion on the findings of the sciences relative to the cosmos, life, humankind and human culture, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Field Museum Center for Cultural Understanding and Change sponsored the three day Epic of Evolution conference, November 12 - 14 in Chicago. Distinguished scientists and theologians presented evidence and interpretation of the grand panorama of life in our universe.

Beginning with cosmic origins — evolution on a grand scale (Joel Primack and Brian Swimme), and proceeding to life on earth and mechanisms of evolution (Ursula Goodenough, Niles Eldredge, John Haught), to the appearance of homo sapiens ( Ian Tattersall, Terrence Deacon, Nancey Murphy), to the journey toward meaning — the evolution of culture, society and religion (Solomon Katz, Mary Evelyn Tucker, Philip Hefner), to the evolution of ethics and morality (Francisco Ayala, Loyal Rue, Stephen J. Pope), and concluding with evolution and the human future (Mary Barber, N. Scott Momady, Thomas Berry).
