A VOLUNTARY "TREE TAX" HELPS MONITOR FOREST PRODUCTS USE

The Friends in Unity with Nature of the Northern Yearly Meeting (NYM), composed of Quaker meetings in five upper Midweste states, have developed the Tree Tax program as an educational tool for individuals, households, businesses, and faith communities. Participants follow four steps:

  1. Keep track of how much paper, wood or other forest products they are responsible for.
  2. Decide on a Tax Rate (e.g. a penny a page for paper use, with credit for recycling)
  3. Pay your taxes. Money may be donated to the NYM tree tax fund, or time and money assessed may be used for a forest restoration project in your local community.
  4. Contact the NYM Friends in Unity with Nature to share ideas and experience in using the program.
