SUBURBAN CHURCH PROMOTES URBAN FORESTRY

St. Andrew Lutheran Church in suburban Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, celebrated April 27 as EcoSunday. The title was "The Earth is the Lord's; the Lord is the Vine!" The day before, young people from four ELCA churches in Detroit were busy digging up maple and green ash saplings in woods belonging to the church. Along with St. Andrew members, under the supervision of Pastor Fred Overdier, the visitors learned to identify, ball, and pack the young trees, preparing them for transplanting in their own inner city neighborhoods. Several Detroit churches have adopted vacant lots and worked to make them pocket parks.

In addition to the woods, the 8- acre St. Andrew property has been used for community gardens.
