Volume Five, Number Four March/April 1996 Call to Action:Do Not Wait For Earth Day!IF NOT THE CHURCHES, WHO? Endangered Species Act Bills in Congress to "reform" the Endangered Species Act (ESA) set out to destroy a vital environmental protection law in the name of economic expediency. Congress last year put a moratorium on new listings of endangered species, and is about to dismantle the ESA further by cutting funding for the listing and designation of critical habitat. Over 500 animal and plant species are waiting to be listed. The cost of saving a species from extinction increases as that species' numbers dwindle, and its habitat is destroyed.
Lawless Logging Habitat destruction accelerates under the Timber Clearcut Rider which was signed into law last July. The rider allows cutting of healthy forest in the name of "salvage," and suspends our basic environmental laws, including the ESA and the Clean Water Act, for the sake of timber sales from our national forests. Congresswomen Elizabeth Furse (D-OR) and Connie Morella (R-MD) have filed HR 2745 to repeal the timber rider, restore the laws and protect our forests. A companion bill to repeal the rider has been filed in the Senate by Senators Bill Bradley (D-NJ) and Barbara Boxer (D-CA). Write or call your Representative and Senators now asking them to co-sponsor these bills to repeal the rider completely. Remind them that honoring and preserving God's creation is a religious issue.
