WORLD FOOD DAY — A CHANCE TO BUILD PUBLIC WILL TO ALLEVIATE HUNGER

October 16, 1995

Why do people allow hunger, homelessness, violence, oppression, and war? One answer is that not enough people care. Another answer is that the many who do care are not working together as effectively and creatively as they could. World Food Day (WFD) can be used to change concern into action.

The first World Food Day was celebrated on October 16, 1981, in recognition of the founding in 1945 of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the lead agency of the UN system for technical assistance, research and policy making in world agriculture, fishing, forestry and rural development. World Food Day is observed in 150 nations. In the USA it has over 400 sponsoring organizations, including one or more associated with every major religious denomination.

Now is the time to form a committee or coalition and begin to plan how to use Sunday, October 15th and/or Monday, October 16th as an opportunity for informed action. Use it to increase understanding of the interrelated local and global issues involved in trade, food systems, food security, poverty and starvation.
