'COMMUNITY WITH ALL CREATION' THEME FOCUSES EARTH DAY CELEBRATIONS

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of Earth Day, twenty six area organizations, including five congregations, joined for five days of celebration, prayer and study in the beautiful North Idaho town of Sandpoint (pop. 5,500), located on Lake Pend d'Oreille, near snow-covered Schweitzer Mountain.

Keynote speaker Jane Blewett, Director of EarthCommunity Center in Laurel MD, spoke on the theme Creating Community with All Creation, one of the topics of an ongoing study series, Creating the Future of Sacred Earth Associates, the initiating sponsor of the celebration. Blewett challenged her audiences in both Spokane and Sandpoint to understand the human/earth relationship and our place in the total earth community; to re-vision reality.

A family fun night April 21st launched the five day event, featuring the Coeur d'Alene Marimba Band and a multi-media slide show on Travels in Wilderness. On Saturday adults and children joined forces in an Earth Clean-up Walk. Participating congregations (Quaker, Catholic, Church of God, Episcopal, and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) also used the Community with All Creation theme in Sunday church services.

Monday and Tuesday participants grappled with some practical issues. Representatives of the academic community, the Sandpoint Ranger District, the Kalispel Tribe and the city council joined Jane Blewett in a forum to share ideas on redesigning the system and restoring Planet Earth.
