Volume Four, Number Four March/April 1995 CALIFORNIA YOUTH LEAD THEIR CONGREGATIONS INTO EARTH CAREImmediately after attending the NACCE sponsored Youth Ecology Conference in Oceanside last fall, seventh grader Debi Spindelman began planning the 1995 Earth Day service for Grace Presbyterian Church in Vista CA. On April 23 Debi and the rest of her youth group will lead the worship entitled "God's Creation; Handle With Care." They will present songs, scripture, a children's story and a skit during two services. Each member of the congregation will hold for a moment the offering bowl, decorated as a hemisphere of Earth, before passing it on. Between services the youth will display various environmental topics in booths on the patio. Other youth groups that attended the 1994 conference will be conducting Earth Day services or other environmental events this spring in at least 9 churches: the Congregational Church of Northridge, Moreno Valley United Methodist, Reseda United Methodist, Tustin Presbyterian, Mission Hills First Congregation UCC in San Diego, First Presbyterian in Oceanside, Inglewood Presbyterian, Pilgrim United Church in Carlsbad, and Bethel Presbyterian in South Gate. Taking the lead for this year's NACCE sponsored event in Southern California, the youth of All Souls Episcopal Church in San Diego have agreed to be the San Diego County host for the 1995 Christian Youth Ecology Celebration to be held the same day as the big beach clean-up Saturday September 23 (Sept.16 in other counties). To be a host church, a youth group with an interested adult leader must plan and carry out an event immediately before or after the statewide beach clean-up, or other service activity in the case of inland churches. Currently the coordinators are looking for host churches for the September 16, 1995, Christian Youth Ecology Celebration in Orange, Riverside, Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. For more information contact Pam Marino, 5162 Maple, Irvine CA 92715, 714/786-0969.
