Volume Four, Number Six July/August 1995 CAR FREE SUNDAY AN IDEA FROM ENGLAND'S EVANGELICAL ALLIANCEThe Creation Care Group of the Evangelical Alliance launched the UK's first car free day in June 1994 and were bowled over by the media and membership enthusiasm for it. Over 25 radio stations covered the day and a Yorkshire Post feature pictured a Vicar on a skateboard. "Skateboarding Vicars" was also the theme of the Guardian's warning to pedestrians. The more serious side of Car Free Sunday, June 25,1995, was about responsible everyday car use. This year the Evangelical Alliance sent a Department of Transport leaflet on responsible motoring to its membership. The spiritual challenge is to drive more slowly; to use the car to help those who don't have one; and to leave the car home to walk, cycle or skateboard to church.
