BLACK CHURCHES TO FORM ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE NETWORK

Leaders of 6 major Black denominations representing 13 million Americans gathered in Washington DC, December 1-2, for a Black Church Environmental Justice Summit, sponsored by the National Council of Churches and funded through the National Religious Partnership for the Environment. In addition to an address by Vice President Al Gore, participants heard testimonies from African-American leaders fighting toxic dumping in their communities. A Steering Committee was appointed to establish the Black Church Environmental Justice Network to expand the congregational base of participation in the environmental justice movement.
