Volume Three, Number Three January/February 1994 NATIONAL COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN (NCCW) AWARDS TWO ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP PRIZESThe first environmental stewardship awards for outstanding activities by NCCW affiliates participating in "The Earth: In Our Hands" program were presented at the NCCW convention in September 1993. The award-winning group in a small community, St. Peter's Altar and Rosary, Gunnison CO, joined with other organizations to develop an outdoor nature lab in connection with 65 acres of wetlands. The women involved the Parish Council, religious education classes, parish youth program and Knights of Columbus in planting vegetation, monitoring wildlife, building bridges and making trails. The Green Bay WI Diocesan Council of Catholic Women was the winner of the award for projects involving several parishes and community groups. Among their projects were the the sale of a ready-to-assemble birdfeeder kit; creating an educational spinning question board (Wheel of Survival) for the zoo; tree plantings; establishing a wildflower prairie; distributing ecology puzzles, quizzes and coloring books to the schools, and becoming involved in numerous Water and Soil Stewardship Week projects.
