To bring light to the darkness, we need to learn from the mirror of the past 50 years." (from the brochure ) Since 1945 the atomic bomb has been exploded on the deserts of the United States (particularly on the Shoshone Indian land), Australia, China, Russia and the islands of the South Pacific, leaving a legacy of destruction, suffering and death, and furthering the moral and financial bankruptcy of nations. Sponsors of the pilgrimage are the Nevada Desert Experience, Pax Christi, USA and other peace groups and spiritual communities. The Pilgrimage, starting July 16, 1995 at Chimayo (Healing Shrine) and Los Alamos, NM will proceed to the Nevada Test Site, San Francisco and Lawrence Livermore Labs, the Marshall Islands, Hiroshima and Nagasaki to re-trace the path of the bomb.
