Volume Two, Number Three January/February 1993 EARTH TEAM: CATHOLIC WOMEN PROMOTE VOLUNTEER PROGRAMAs part of The Earth: In Our Hands program, the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) is working with the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) to recruit volunteers for the Earth Team program. As part of a local, community "conservation team," volunteers bring special talents and enthusiasm that help meet important education and resource conservation objectives. With more than 8,500 volunteers nationally, Earth Team members enhance the conservation of natural resources in thousands of communities. In 1991, nearly 39,000 hours were volunteered to SCS for such activities as helping landowners reduce wind and water erosion; clearing streams; enhancing wildlife habitat; planting trees; helping professional conservationists study soils, make survey maps and collect data; and even helping school children recover an eroded school yard. An Outdoor Classroom at Every School Site Volunteers can be the catalyst to organize a school's outdoor classroom as a school-community activity, drawing together businesses, governments, churches, teachers, administrators, food service and custodial staff, students from all grades and resource professionals. The volunteer can make sure that every step along the program path is an educational activity. For more information on resource conservation opportunities call 1-800-THE-SOIL (800/843-7645).
