Gulf War
I think you're a cormorant, victim in oil
slicked like velvet, a cloak that weighs down
and is deadly, useless burden you happen to carry.
Pressed on you now in our stead.
No refusals come from your closed beak,
though you sink hopelessly deeper.
The camera spares final submersion. Instead
it spans beaches where you
and your kind wash up when it's over,
where your death quickens life in this mythic
and ritual act that creates our repentance.
