THE SOCIETY OF ST. ANDREW GLEANS HOPE

For the past four years youth and adults of Trinity Lutheran Church, Newport News VA, with others from Methodist, Episcopal and Presbyterian congregations who participate in the Society of St. Andrew, go to farms in the Richmond area to glean the harvest. In July their harvest team gathered 22,000 pounds of corn, over 500 cantaloupes, 40 bushels of fresh tomatoes and 30 bushels of cucumbers for distribution to the poor. They canned over 1,000 cans of corn and 1,000 cans of tomatoes and tomato sauce. Other harvesters are on call as part of the Gleaning Network. Some farmers call on the group for help in the regular harvest and donate part of it to the Harvest of Hope. Other farmers may donate a whole field to the gleaners.

The Society of St. Andrew was started 10 years ago by 2 Methodist ministers in a small town near Lynchburg VA. Its first "recovery crop" was potatoes. The society is active in several states.
